Essay Sample 65-

An increasing number of schools provide tablets and laptop computers for students to use in school, replacing books and other printed materials like exams and assignments.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

Due to recent major advancements in information technology, books and printed materials are being replaced by devices such as tablets and laptop computers in numerous schools all around the globe. This essay will discuss both pros and cons of this trend.

It is evident that technology has been helping mankind in every aspect of life and this includes, without a doubt, the use of technology in education. First of all, it has accelerated and simplified our methods in access to information. So it certainly would not be wrong to say that educating students has become much easier and faster with the use of technology with being more and more present in schools. Just a couple years ago, when technological devices were not so prevalent at schools, students would spend a significant amount of their time and effort doing their research for an assignment by flipping through many books, encyclopedias, dictionaries in libraries. However,  today the same task can be accomplished within a much shorter time period just by a click. The advantages of technology in schools are not limited by this. Education can be much more advanced with the increasing number of technological materials used in class in order to raise the effectiveness of this teaching process. To give an example, a diagram of the brain showing neurological connections on a laptop screen would be way more intriguing rather than some writings on a piece of paper. This way, lessons would be much more helpful and attractive for students and this will eventually lead them being more successful at school.

Despite these advantages, we can’t deny the fact that this has brought some adverse impacts on students. The excessive usage of technological devices has scientifically proven to be very unhealthy not only for the human body but also for our mental health. Initially, it is likely to become addictive. This addiction can cause some serious issues, both physical and psychological, particularly for children. Extensive viewing of the computer screen can cause itchy eyes, blurred vision and headaches. In addition to its detrimental effects on our eyesight, sitting for a long time and being inactive can contribute to a poor posture of someone. Last but not least, it can deteriorate the social life of a person, making them antisocial and lonely.

In conclusion, technology is becoming a major part of many aspects of our lives, particularly in education. While it has both some benefits and drawbacks, in my opinion, its advantages outweigh the other. If schools can regulate their usage, it will help to improve education immensely.
