MOCK SPEAKING QUESTIONS: FAMILY
1- Do you prefer spending time with your family or friends? Why?
Sample Answer 1- If I had to choose between the two, I’ll go with my friends. Firstly, I enjoy spending time with my friends, more than my family. I like hanging out with my friends. We usually play basketball, or go and watch a movie. I have Some close friends who are like soulmates, they sometimes become as close as brothers and sisters and become my family. I don't mind going to family gatherings, but going to the movies, or playing basketball with my buddies can be more exciting and fun. In addition, you always have to spend time with your family, because your family is always by your side while your friends can come and go. You can't see them whenever you want.
Sample Answer 2- Well, this is a tough question to answer! My family has always a unique place for me. However, this does not mean that my friends do not have a special place in my heart. Family always comes first. They are the only people with my blood. They are the only people who can protect me from dangers and look after me unconditionally. In addition, while some of our friends are quite important, we are not always in contact with others. However, this is not the case for family members. We are always in touch* with them.
(*soul mate: someone you have a very close relationship with because you share the same interests.- ruh ikizi)
(*be in touch: continue to communicate - iletişimde olmak)
2- Is your family very important to you?
Absolutely. They are the most valuable people in my life. Most importantly, they are the only people with my blood. They are the only people who can protect me from dangers. Actually, most of us are not always aware of the importance of our family and their effect on our personality. We may have a lot of people in our life including friends, colleagues but only my family members accept me for what I do and who I am.
3- How much time do you manage to spend with members of your family? What sorts of things do you like to do together?
Normally, during the weekdays, we can't spend much time together. As you guess, everyone has their own schedule. My parents have a full-time job and I am busy with school lessons. The only time we are available is the weekends. On weekends, we always go out travelling around the city, visiting various forests and have a one-night camp. My father loves wild-life photography and my mother is into* hiking. She loves walking in nature. They both have a great impact on my love of nature.
*( be into is used to express enthusiasm and interest for something)
4- Do you get on well with your family? (Why?)
Yes, obviously I get on well with my parents. They both are the most important people I have in my life. They care for me a lot and they always support me. Whenever I have difficulty they help me. They share their thoughts and experiences. Most importantly, they are very good listeners, especially my father. He always quietly listens to my problems. I suppose I am so lucky to have such wonderful parents.
5- In what ways have families in your country changed in recent?
The roles of husbands and wives have changed a lot in the last 3 decades. Traditionally, they used to have more strict roles. The father was the person who brings home the money whereas the mother took care of the house and the family but today both spouses have been more open to sharing their roles. Additionally, limiting the number of children is another change in a Turkish family. Today Turkish parents especially the ones living in big cities prefer having smaller families due to the high cost of living.
6- Should husbands and wives have different roles within the family? Why (not)?
Sample Answer 1- Traditionally, spouses used to have clear-cut roles in society. Husbands were supposed to provide the financial need of the family, while women were expected to do housework but today, the roles of husbands and wives have changed a lot and they have been more open to sharing their roles. I think this change is good. It is not necessary to define each role. In my opinion, they can take both roles as long as it is good for their children.
Sample Answer 2- I suppose as long as parents communicate effectively and openly with each other they will have a healthy marriage. I mean that the best thing for parents is to discuss what works for them. A healthy marriage is the one which is well negotiated. For example, my parents always talk about the tasks they need to do. They make decisions and plan accordingly. They always help each other. I always feel lucky to have parents who communicate and collaborate effectively.
7- How has the size of the family changed in the last few decades in your country?
Obviously, families have changed over the past thirty years. Due to the high cost of living, work-life balance and decreasing fertility rates, the size of families has become smaller. Parents don’t want to have a big family anymore. They prefer limiting the number of their children to one or two. There is an increasing number of children growing up in single-parent families. In addition, statistics show that the average age of women having their first child has risen over 30. It seems to me that this won’t have positive effects in the near future.
8- How do you think the family will change in the future?
Compared to the past, the concept of family, without doubt, has changed a lot over the last few decades and there are obvious reasons to believe that it will keep changing. Firstly, I believe that the number of single parents will increase. What I mean is that the number of single mothers looking after children will increase. At this point, I believe that the role of grandparents is becoming more important. Since mothers need to work, they will mostly rely on their parents. Besides, since technological developments have made it easier for many people to migrate to different countries, the number of multi-racial families is expected to increase. I mean more and more people will get married to people from different races and cultures.
